6.4 P1000 report

On one of the information tables there appeared a very interesting 1996 report called “P1000 Science and Technology Strategy for Information Visualization”, subtitled “a roadmap to provide information visualization technology broadly within the Intelligence Community. The P1000 Visualization Planning Committee Member Organizations were AF497, CIA, CIO, CMS, DIA, DOE, FBI, FinCEN, MCIA, NAIC, NGIC, NRL, NRO, NSA, and ONI.

The report was prompted by the recognition of the importance of information visualization to the Intelligence Community. It categorizes the current technologies and assesses usage gaps. It the provides a roadmap of organization and technical approaches to develop, deploy and support information visualization sciences and technologies.

The report describes the current state of twelve technology areas and recommends a strategic approach to furthering each of these within the community. These areas are:

  1. Visualization of Text Data and Similar Information
  2. Visualization of Structured Data Sets
  3. Visualization of Images, Spatial Data and Similar Information
  4. Animation and Motion
  5. Higher Dimensional Graphics
  6. Computer-Augmented and Virtual Reality
  7. User Interaction and Interface Technologies
  8. Web Technologies
  9. Computer Supported Collaborative Work
  10. Multimedia Technologies
  11. Education and Learning
  12. Cognition and Perception Sciences
