This paper presented a clustering technique based on an enhanced tree-map. Tree-maps were introduced in 1992 by Ben Shneidermann. They are a 2d space filling approach to hierarchy displays. This paper introduces several modifications to the basic tree-map that produces a much better visual clustering. It can easily handle hierarchies with tens of thousands of leaf nodes. I was impressed by this technique and recommend it for inclusion in a visualization toolbox.
